Nickel Overload 3 is a DB blitz out of the 2-4 Dbl Mug look that sends five rushers to one side while dropping into a Cover 3 shell behind it, creating an overload pressure look. The diagram shows the two outside underneath defenders and the slot corner crashing downhill together while the three deep defenders sink into thirds and the middle linebacker spikes the seam to protect against a quick throw over the middle. This is a zone blitz beater in that it disguises numbers advantage on one edge while still playing three deep zone behind it, so the primary read progression for the defense is to confirm the overload side gets home before the quarterback can climb the pocket, then fall back on the deep thirds and the vertical spike defender to close any window over the middle.
Watch for the offense sliding protection toward the overload side pre-snap, which tells you they diagnosed the blitz and you may want to check to a different call. If the running back stays in to chip or block on the overload side, expect the extra rusher to get picked up, so rely on the underneath spike defender and deep thirds to hold up longer. Post-snap, key any receiver working a quick out or slant away from the overload since that is the zone beater window the offense will try to exploit before the rush arrives. Watch the deep middle third defender for any late breaking crosser or dig route that could split the zone if the underneath linebackers get pulled toward the blitz. This beats empty and spread formations that cannot handle numbers on one edge, but struggles against heavy run formations with extra blockers who can pick up the overload cleanly.
Check the offensive formation strength pre-snap and align the overload blitz to attack the weaker protection side, usually away from a running back or tight end who can pick up extra rushers.
Use this call on early downs against offenses that like quick game and hitches, since the overload rush forces fast decisions before route combos develop downfield.
Combine this with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 1 Hole earlier in a series so the quarterback sees three deep shells consistently, then hit them with the extra pressure once they start sitting in the pocket.
Bait the quarterback with the same pre-snap look as Nickel Dog 3 Buzz or Nickel Sim 2 to disguise whether the pressure is coming or if it is a standard drop back zone look.
User the slot corner or the crashing edge defender manually to time the blitz with the snap count and beat any blocker who slides late to pick up the overload.
