Both mugged linebackers loop through gaps off the snap to disguise the rush lane, the two outside cornerbacks squeeze underneath routes with in breaking angle drops, and the deep safety in the middle of the field bails to the post to hold the single high shell. This is a zone blitz built to confuse protection with the stunt while still playing sound three deep, four under coverage behind it.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back and offensive tackle assignments pre snap, since a full slide protection can pick up the loop stunt and leave your coverage exposed underneath for a hot throw. Key the deep middle safety rotation post snap, if he is late getting to the post against a vertical seam or deep crosser, that is where the shell breaks down. This look is strong against man beater crossers and shallow drag concepts because the underneath zone defenders squeeze the throwing lanes as they drop. It is vulnerable to quick screens and RPO bubble concepts to the side away from the stunt, since the looping linebackers create natural voids in the box. Look for the offense to attack the seam behind the looping linebacker with a tight end flare or seam route, that is the classic answer to this blitz and shows up immediately after the snap if protection holds.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and medium when the offense is likely to run empty protection or a slow developing play action, since the loop stunt exploits any hesitation in the blocking scheme.

Pre snap, identify if the offense has a running back staying in to block. If not, the interior loop almost always finds a free rusher through the vacated gap.

Bait the quarterback by showing pressure with both mugged linebackers before the snap, then drop one into the underneath zone if you diagnose a quick game concept like slants or flat routes.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 1 Hole from the same set so the offense cannot key on the mugged look and sit on the blitz.

Avoid calling this on obvious long yardage downs against empty formations, since the deep middle third can be exposed if the loop stunt does not generate pressure fast enough.
