SFT PA Sprint HB Flat out of Maryland I is a play-action sprint out concept run from a 12 personnel look with the offset backfield tight to the formation. Off the play fake, the QB rolls with a sprint out flow to the strong side while the HB releases into the flat as the checkdown and outlet, and two vertical stems stretch the field: one receiver breaks outside up the numbers on a deep out and go while a second climbs a deep post/skinny corner from the inline attachment point. This is a play-action man beater designed to hold linebackers with the run fake and then attack the flat to intermediate levels off the rollout, with the primary read starting on the flat route, progressing to the intermediate breaking route, and finishing with the deep vertical if the rollout buys enough time.
Pre-snap, identify two high safeties versus single high since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells will have a flat defender sitting on the HB route and a deep half player capped over the vertical, taking away both the short and deep options. Watch the flat defender at the snap: if a linebacker or nickel jumps the HB flat route immediately, the defense is likely sitting on play-action and the intermediate breaking route behind him should be open. Key the play side outside linebacker or slot corner for a nano blitz off the edge since the sprint out rollout is vulnerable to quick pressure that beats the pocket before routes develop. Against man coverage, look for a safety walking down late or a corner in press since Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks will surrender the deep out and go or the post if the rollout protection holds up. Cover 3 with a hard flat corner squatting on the HB route is the shell that shuts this play down fastest, forcing the QB to hold the ball longer and rely on the deep shot into a tighter window.
Use this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when you have already established the HB run game from Maryland I so the play fake actually holds second level defenders. Check the flat defender pre-snap: if you see a corner or safety sitting soft in the flat, be ready to skip the HB flat read and go straight to the deep out or post breaking off the rollout. Against man coverage, trust the deep crosser or post working away from the rollout flow since the sprint action naturally creates separation on defenders trying to carry across the field. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you see zero blitz pre-snap since the sprint out design leaves the backside thin. Pair this with Sft Mtn PA Sprint HB Flat (the motion variant) and PA Boot to keep defenses guessing between motion and no motion sprint out looks, then mix in Duo or HB Zone Wk from the same set to keep linebackers honest against the run.
