Breakdown

Sft Mtn PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprintout concept out of the Maryland I formation in 12 personnel, using pre-snap motion to shift protection and create a numbers advantage on the flat side. The play fakes inside zone to hold the linebackers, then rolls the QB outside the pocket with the HB releasing to the flat as the checkdown while a TE runs a deeper breaking route to occupy the flat defender and open a window behind it. The primary read progression starts with the flat route off the HB release, then works up to the intermediate TE breaking route if the flat defender squats, giving a quick answer against both man and zone pressure.

Defensive Reads

Check the flat defender immediately after the snap, if he sits on the HB flat route the QB should climb the progression to the TE breaking route behind him. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker spying the sprintout lane, this is the biggest threat since he can undercut both the flat route and the shallow crosser. Cover 3 sky and Cover 4 with a hard flat corner are the toughest shells against this concept because they clog the flat with an extra defender. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play excels, since the play-action fake and roll frequently freezes linebackers just long enough to spring the flat route. Look for a corner blitz or edge pressure from the sprintout side pre-snap, if the slot or edge defender walks up late, get the ball out on the flat route quickly before the rollout gets compressed.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a clean man beater on the flat route.

This play works best on early downs or manageable third and short since the sprintout limits your ability to hold the ball deep down the field.

Hot route the backside TE into a quick out or slant if you diagnose a hard edge blitz coming from the sprintout side, this gives the QB an immediate answer without needing to reset his feet.

Pair this with SFT PA Sprint HB Flat and Sft Mtn Zone WK in the same drive to keep the defense guessing between motion and no motion looks off identical formation and personnel.

Sprint the QB away from an overloaded box or blitz-heavy side pre-snap using the flip or strafe mechanic to buy extra time and stress the contain defender.
