DBL Outs is a play-action passing concept out of Maryland I in the Close set, using 12 personnel to sell run action before attacking the flat and boundary with two out breakers. The play-action fake goes to the left (red route) drawing linebackers up, while the receiving corps runs a stacked out combo underneath and a deep out to the flat side on the right. The near slot runs a quick out sitting just past the line, the inline receiver on the right runs an out breaking flat route, and the far outside receiver clears vertically before breaking out toward the sideline, creating a natural high low out concept. Primary progression starts with the deep out to the boundary, works down to the intermediate out over the middle, and checks down to the flat route underneath if the defense jumps the deeper throws.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety depth before the snap, since a single high safety indicates man or Cover 3, both of which are vulnerable to the out breaking combo attacking the sideline. Watch the linebackers at the snap, if they bite hard on the play-action fake it confirms run blitz tendencies and opens up both the intermediate and deep out throws. Key the flat defender and cornerback relationship on the right side, since a hard flat drop with the corner sitting deep signals Cover 2 and forces the quarterback to work the middle out route instead. Identify any user controlled defender lurking near the stacked out routes, since a spy or rat defender sitting in the shallow zone can undercut the underneath out and bait an interception. If the defense shows Cover 4 or quarters with corners playing outside leverage, expect the deep out routes to be squeezed, which should push the quarterback to the shorter flat route as a checkdown.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing toward the play-action fake, since the run threat from Maryland I with 12 personnel is what opens passing lanes.
Attack single high safety shells and man coverage first, since the stacked out routes create natural picks and rubs that are tough for man defenders to fight through.
Hot route the flat route into a shallow drag or spot if you see Cover 2 or Cover 4 sitting the corners deep, since underneath zone defenders will squat on the out breakers.
Pair this play with Duo or HB Lead Dive earlier in a series so the play-action fake actually threatens the defense, then dial up DBL Outs on second or third and medium once run tendencies are established.
Throw with anticipation on the intermediate out route before the receiver breaks, since defenders reading the quarterback's eyes can jump the route if you wait too long.
