Power O out of Maryland I (Close set, 12 personnel) is a gap scheme run play designed to pull a blocker across the formation and create a double team at the point of attack. The diagram shows the fullback and pulling lineman working to the play side while the halfback takes a downhill path off the mesh point, aiming to hit the hole behind the kick out block. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read is the play side double team block: the ball carrier presses the hole, reads the fullback's kick out on the edge defender, and cuts off the pulling guard leading through the alley.
Watch the linebacker depth before the snap. Linebackers stacked tight to the line can beat the pulling blocker to the hole and blow up the play. Identify one high versus two high safety shells. Single high safeties often mean an extra defender in the box, which forces the ball carrier to bounce outside the kick out block. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker. If they crash down hard on the fullback's kick out, the cutback lane behind the pulling guard opens up. Nano blitzes and edge pressure from the play side can disrupt the pulling lineman's track before he reaches the second level, so user a defender to spy the pull if available. Against a stacked box with run blitz tendencies, this play struggles, so switch to a play-action shot off the same look to punish overaggressive linebacker flow.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you want to establish tempo and set up misdirection later in the drive.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or fewer in the box, Power O has a numbers advantage and should hit downhill quickly.
Use hot routes to keep both tight ends in as blockers if you see an extra defender walked down near the line of scrimmage.
Pair this play with Duo and HB Toss from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on the same gap every snap.
Set up SFT PA Sprint HB Flat or PA Power O later in the series once defenders start flowing hard to the point of attack, since the play-action look off this same personnel and formation will freeze linebackers.
