Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the linebacker depth and alignment: stacked linebackers sitting tight to the line signal they are keying run fits immediately, which can shut down the double-team advantage before it develops. Watch for a Mike linebacker or Sam linebacker cheating downhill pre-snap, as this indicates the defense anticipates gap scheme runs from 12 personnel and Maryland I. Post-snap, key whether the defensive tackles get moved off the double team or hold their ground, since a strong interior push is what creates the cutback and vertical lanes this play relies on. If the defense runs a base 4-3 or 3-4 look with linebackers reading and reacting rather than blitzing, this play has room to hit for positive yardage. Use manual control on your HB and press the double-team blocks before making your final cut, letting the double team clear before committing to a lane. Pair Duo with Power O and HB Lead Dive from this same set to keep the defense guessing between downhill gap schemes, then mix in PA Power O or PA Boot once the defense starts crashing hard on early downs. Avoid calling Duo into overloaded fronts with extra defenders shaded to the play side unless you have a strong backside cutback lane.
