Breakdown

SFT PA Double Cross is a play-action pass out of Maryland I in the Close set, using 12 personnel to sell run action before attacking downfield. Off the fake, two receivers cross the field on deep in-breaking routes (one from each side crossing at depth), while the fullback or tight end runs a shallow crossing route underneath as a checkdown and a flanker on the boundary runs an out breaking route toward the sideline. The primary read starts with the deep crosser coming from the strong side, working to the opposite crosser if that lane is taken, and finishes with the underneath crosser as the answer against zone drops. This is a man beater at heart, designed to exploit man coverage in the crossing lanes, though the underneath option gives it some traction against zone drops as well.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth before the snap: if both safeties sit deep in a two high shell, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 and prioritize the underneath crosser since the deep crossers will run into help. Watch the linebackers immediately after the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake it confirms man or aggressive run fits and the deep crossing routes will have wide open running lanes behind them. User the closest defender to the deep crosser's crossing point to sit in the throwing lane and jump the route, this is the single biggest counter to this concept. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets picked apart by the double cross since defenders in man have to fight through traffic at the crossing point. Cover 3 with a hard flowing linebacker to the crossing routes and disciplined zone drops shrinks the passing windows and forces the quarterback to check down early to the underneath route.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake with a patient snap count so linebackers commit downhill before you pull it back for the pass. Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone: if the defender follows your motion man across the formation you are almost certainly seeing man coverage and both deep crossers become live options. Hot route the underneath crosser to a flat or spot route against zone heavy shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 to shorten the throw and beat the shallow zone drops. Pair this play with Duo or HB Zone Wk on early downs to establish the run look, then dial up SFT PA Double Cross once linebackers start biting on run fakes. Best used on second or third and medium since the deep crossers need time to develop and a shorter underneath option is available if the rush arrives early.
