Breakdown

Sft Mtn Zone WK is an inside zone run out of the Maryland I formation in 12 personnel, using a weak-side motion to shift the defensive alignment before the snap. The fullback and offensive line execute zone blocking rules, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to seal linebackers, while the motion man can create a numbers advantage or force a linebacker to declare his run fit. The primary read is the playside A gap to B gap combo block: identify whether the double team pushes vertical movement, then bounce outside off the fullback's kickout block if the backside pursuit flows too hard inside.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety with linebackers stacked tight signals a run blitz or heavy box that this zone scheme can gash if the double team wins. If the defense shows two safeties deep and linebackers spread wide, expect quicker flow to the play side, so plan to cut back against overpursuit. Watch the motion man's defender, if a linebacker or slot defender follows him across the formation it confirms man coverage and thins out the box for the run. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he shoots the gap immediately rather than reading the double team, bounce the run outside off the fullback's block. Beware defenses that show a mug front with both inside linebackers on the line pre-snap, since heavy blitz packages there can beat the zone scheme before blocks develop.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into showing blitz or man coverage responsibilities before the snap so you can diagnose the front. Run this on early downs in normal run/pass splits where defenses are still respecting balanced personnel from 12 personnel sets. Watch the weak side end and outside linebacker reaction to the motion man, if they crash hard, hot route the fullback to seal the edge instead of climbing. Pair this with Duo and Power O from the same Close set so defenses cannot sit on one blocking scheme, then mix in Sft PA Sprint HB Flat off similar formation and motion to punish aggressive run support with play action. Against stacked fronts, user the fullback manually to control the first linebacker threat through the A gap rather than trusting the AI engagement.
