HB Blast is a downhill power run out of the I Form Slot Open 20 personnel set, showing a fullback lead blocker attacking straight through the A-gap ahead of the HB. The diagram shows the HB taking a direct, nearly vertical handoff path with the fullback isolating on whichever linebacker fills the hole first, making this an Iso-tagged blast concept designed to move the pile between the tackles. Since there are no route lines beyond the backfield action shown, the primary read is simply the fullback's block: key his shoulder to decide whether to cut off his hip or bounce to the play side gap.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth. Stacked linebackers within 3 yards of the line signal a run blitz designed to beat this exact play. Watch for a Mike linebacker cheating toward the A-gap before the snap, that alignment is built to blow up the fullback's Iso block and stuff the HB Blast for a loss. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and linebacker fit. If they both attack the same gap the fullback is isolating on, the runner needs to cut away from the double team immediately. This play struggles against heavy fronts and gap-sound 4-3 or 46 looks with disciplined linebackers who stay square and read their keys instead of shooting gaps. It succeeds against lighter boxes, nickel and dime packages, or defenses that show blitz but drop into zone coverage, since those alignments leave fewer bodies to fill the interior run lanes.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you have a numbers advantage in the box, since HB Blast is a pure downhill run with no deception built in.
Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has 7 or more in the box against 20 personnel, kill this play and switch to Slot Option or PA Scissors to punish the loaded front.
Trust the fullback's Iso block completely. Do not try to bounce outside immediately, press the hole so the linebacker has to commit before cutting off his block.
Pair HB Blast with HB Draw and HB Iso in the same drive to condition the defense to sit on downhill run action, then hit them with PA Scissors or Dagger once linebackers start crashing hard on the snap.
Use HB Blast in short yardage and goal line situations where a physical, gap-controlled run gets tough yards without needing a home run play.
