Rollout Smash from I Form Slot Open pairs a classic smash concept on the left with a corner route out of the backfield or slot on the right, both stems breaking outside toward the sideline. On the right side, a defender (the red route) runs a quick flat/out breaking route to hold underneath defenders while the QB rolls out toward that side. This is a Cover 2 beater by design: the deep corner routes on both sides stretch the flat defenders and hard corners vertically, attacking the seams outside the safety's zone. Primary read progression starts with the deep corner route on the rollout side (right), then works down to the flat/underneath route if the corner is capped, and finally comes back to the far side deep route as a backside shot if the play holds up long enough.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties splitting the field evenly before the snap, which signals Cover 2 and tells you the corner routes will have room to sit down between levels. If the flat defender or curl flat player runs with the underneath route immediately at the snap, that is a strong indicator of man coverage and you should progress quickly to the deep corner route. Key the cornerback's backpedal depth: a corner playing soft off coverage at 7-8 yards is vulnerable to the corner route sitting down in the void behind him. Beware of Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 quarters shells with the safety rotating hard to the rollout side, since this can squeeze the window on the corner route and force a checkdown. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the flat or curl zone on the rollout side, since a smart user player can rob the underneath route and bait the QB into a rollout throw that gets picked.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or 2nd and medium when you expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, since the deep corner routes are designed to split the corner and safety before the safety can rotate over the top.
Check pre-snap safety depth: if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10-12 yards with corners playing soft, that is your green light to roll right and hit the corner route on time.
Use the flat route as your hot read against man pressure since the rollout naturally buys extra time and the QB can throw it away or dump it off if the corner routes are blanketed.
Pair this play with HB Blast or HB Iso earlier in a drive to get the defense sitting on the run before hitting them with the rollout shot play action tempo.
Combine with Quick Slant or Slot Option in your play calling sequence so defenses cannot key on the rollout tendency and start jumping the flat route.
