HB Lead Alert X Lookie

Breakdown

HB Lead Alert X Lookie is an I Form Slot Open run play built as power/iso run with an alert audible built in. The diagram shows the X receiver breaking outside then turning upfield on a lookie route (a vertical alert route) off the line, while the offensive line down blocks with the fullback leading through the hole for the HB on an iso run scheme up the middle. This is primarily a run play, but the X lookie route serves as a big play alert if the defense shows a look that leaves the alert receiver singled up deep. Primary read progression: check the alert route pre-snap or immediately post-snap for a blown coverage or single high look, otherwise trust the fullback lead blocker and hit the iso run between the tackles.

Defensive Reads

Watch for stacked boxes with eight or nine defenders as a sign the CPU or user is selling out to stop the iso run, which is your cue to throw the alert route instead. Check cornerback press alignment on the X receiver since off coverage makes the lookie route easier to complete against zone drops. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 since these leave the alert route in single coverage with no deep help over the top. Man coverage with the linebacker stacked on the fullback lead blocker is a green light to hand it off since the iso block will win most one on one leverage battles at the point of attack. Heavy blitz packages with linebackers crashing downhill pre-snap should be countered by the quick alert throw since the run lanes will be clogged and the blitz creates a one on one matchup outside.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hot route check to see if the defense rotates coverage toward the X alert route before committing to the run. If the safety cheats down into the box on run support, throw off the alert to the X lookie route for an explosive play down the field. Run this on early downs like first or second and short when defenses expect a standard iso or lead run out of I Form Slot Open. Pair this play with HB Iso and HB Blast in the same set so defenses cannot key on the fullback lead action without respecting the deep alert threat. Mix in Quick Slant or Rollout Smash from this set to keep linebackers honest and prevent them from crashing down on the iso run every snap.
