Dagger out of I Form Slot Open sends the outer receiver on a deep vertical seam while the slot receiver runs a dig route underneath that settles behind the linebacker level. The backside receiver runs a comeback breaking away from the formation and the tight end or fullback checks down into the flat while the running back releases into a shallow drag to the boundary. This is a classic man and zone beater built off vertical stress, with the primary read starting on the deep seam to see if it clears out the middle before working down to the dig for the true chain-moving throw.
Defensive Reads
Presnap check safety depth and width, since a single high safety cheating late toward the seam tips off zone coverage and a shaded high safety over the slot suggests man coverage on that receiver. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow linebackers who sink hard on the dig route are reading the quarterback's eyes and can be baited by looking off to the seam first. Cover 3 defenses are vulnerable to the seam and dig combo because the deep third defender cannot cover both routes, but disciplined zone drops that stay square can close the window on the dig quickly. Cover 2 shells get stressed when the seam route occupies the safety and the dig sits in the void between the corner's deep responsibility and the linebacker's shallow drop. Watch for a user linebacker sitting in a lurk spot over the dig route, since a smart defender can jump the route if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify single high versus two high safeties, since Dagger is designed to stress a single high shell by clearing the deep middle with the seam route and opening the dig behind linebackers.
Against man coverage the seam route usually wins outside if you get a favorable matchup, so scan hot routes to speed up the seam release if the corner presses.
Use this in second and long or third and medium situations where the dig route has enough grass to sit down for the sticks.
Pair Dagger with Quick Slant from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter downs, then bring Dagger in on the next snap once linebackers start sitting on quick routes.
If the defense shows heavy blitz looks presnap, check the running back drag or the flat route as a quick outlet instead of forcing the deep progression.
