HB Iso from I Form Slot Open is a straight downhill power run play. The diagram shows the fullback leading through the hole a beat ahead of the halfback, iso blocking on the first defender to show inside the box, while the offensive line combo blocks to seal the interior gaps. This is a pure run play with no route combos to read, so the primary progression is presnap: identify the Mike linebacker and let your fullback square him up, then follow his block through the designated crease.
Defensive Reads
Watch the Mike linebacker depth presnap, if he is stacked tight behind the nose or the three technique he is likely reading iso action and can beat the fullback to the point of attack. Key the fullback release at the snap, a user controlled linebacker who wrong arms or spills the fullback block can blow up this play before it develops. Base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with two gap discipline are the toughest matchups for this play, since a controlled A gap defender forces the halfback to cut outside into pursuit. Look for run blitzes or nano blitz packages sending an extra defender through the A or B gap, these overload the point of attack faster than the fullback can adjust his block. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells with an extra man in the box shut this down quickly, while light boxes out of two high shells or nickel packages give the halfback a clean crease to hit.
Usage Tips
Presnap, count the box defenders and confirm you have a numbers advantage before committing to the run, since Slot Open leaves the slot receiver isolated and can bait defenses into stacking the box.
Use the fullback icon or the lead blocker key to identify which linebacker he is aiming for, then trust that block instead of trying to bounce the run outside immediately.
Run this on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when defenses are showing base personnel or a two high shell, since it punishes light boxes and 4-3 under fronts.
Pair HB Iso with HB Blast and HB Draw out of the same Slot Open look to keep defenders honest on downhill run fits, then counter with Quick Slant or Dagger once the defense starts crashing linebackers early.
If you see a run blitz or extra defender walked into the box presnap, consider audibling to Rollout Smash or PA Scissors to make the defense pay for overcommitting.
