FB Lead Toss Str is a fullback toss run out of the Flexbone Trio Right formation, designed to get the ball to the fullback in space quickly with a lead blocker attacking the play side edge. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard and uses the lead blocker to seal the corner, creating a run lane between the tackle and the toss point. This is a run play built to attack over-pursuing linebackers and light boxes, with the primary read being the play side edge: bounce outside if the corner is sealed and the alley is open, or cut it up inside the lead block if the edge defender squeezes down.
Identify the play side outside linebacker or edge defender first. If he is crashing down hard on the mesh point, the lead blocker should have an easier time turning him out and creating a bounce lane. Watch the play side safety depth pre-snap. A safety sitting in the box or showing run support in the alley is the biggest threat to blow this play up, since he can fill the alley before the lead blocker gets there. This run beats light boxes and zone shells where linebackers are reading run late or scraping slowly. It struggles against aggressive gap exchange fronts and defenses that key motion or formation tendencies with an extra run defender. Post snap, track any user controlled defender flowing hard toward the toss. If a user linebacker or safety is sprinting to the edge immediately, cut it back inside off the fullback's lead block rather than trying to outrun pursuit. Be wary of nano blitz style overloads to the play side edge, since a fast penetrating defender can disrupt the pulling blocker before the lead back can get outside.
Run this out of Trio Right when you see six or fewer defenders in the box, since the flexbone alignment naturally creates numbers advantages if the defense does not adjust with an extra run fitter.
Check the play side cornerback and force defender before the snap. If the corner is aligned tight and the force player is crashing hard, be ready to hot route or simply hold the ball for the cutback lane instead of forcing the bounce.
Pair this with FB Zone Toss and FB Lead Toss Wk in your play calling script so the defense cannot key on a single toss direction, forcing linebackers to respect both sides of the formation equally.
Use FB Lead Toss Str on early downs in normal or run heavy personnel situations, since the defense is more likely to be in base fronts that this play is designed to gash.
Once you get a defense biting hard on the toss action, sequence into PA FB Dive or Fk Rocket Toss Rollout to punish flowing linebackers and aggressive edge defenders with play action.
