FB Trap is a run play out of the Flexbone Trio Right formation that hands the ball to the fullback on a quick-hitting trap concept through the interior of the line. The blocking scheme pulls a guard or uses the fullback's lead blocker to trap the first down lineman inside, creating a natural crease for a north-south burst before the second level fills. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap-exchange defenses, and the primary read progression starts with the trap block at the point of attack, then bounces to the backside cutback lane if the defensive tackle crashes down too hard.
Watch the defensive tackle's first step after the snap, since a hard crash toward the trap alerts the fullback to cut it back immediately rather than forcing the play. Identify if the defense is running a 4-3 under or over front, since a shifted front can remove the natural trap angle and clog the intended lane. Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, since a linebacker sitting too shallow will get walled off easily but one reading run fast can fill the crease before the fullback gets there. User the defensive tackle or nose guard manually if you are on defense, since spying the trap lane and staying square can blow this play up before it develops. Beware of odd fronts with a nose tackle head up on the center, since this alignment can occupy the trap blocker and eliminate the interior crease entirely.
Check the box count pre-snap and only run FB Trap into six or fewer defenders in the box since the play relies on trap blocking rather than numbers advantage.
Look for the defensive tackle aligned in a 3-technique or shading inside, since an over-aggressive interior lineman is exactly who this trap is designed to exploit.
Use this play early in a series to set up FB Dive and FB Dive Wk later, since defenses that key on inside handoff action will start biting on the fake, opening up PA FB Dive.
Avoid calling FB Trap against defenses showing heavy A-gap blitz packages or stacked linebackers at the line, since the trap blocker can get beat by extra defenders shooting the gap.
Pair FB Trap with Tr Cntr Wk in your play-calling sequence to keep the defensive line guessing between trap and counter action, both of which punish overpursuit.
