Fk Rocket Toss Rollout is a play-action rollout out of the Flexbone Trio Right set that disguises a run heavy formation as a boot concept to attack the edge. The line and backfield sell the toss action to hold linebackers and force flow, then the quarterback rolls out with a designed pass off the fake, giving him a run pass option feel on the move. This is a play-action rollout built as a man beater against aggressive linebacker flow, with the primary read being the flat or shallow crosser first, then the deep outlet if the edge defender widens and windows open on the boundary.
Check the defensive end and outside linebacker on the play side before the snap, if they are crashing hard on run fakes on tape this rollout will exploit their aggression every time. Identify cover 3 or cover 1 shells with linebackers sitting tight to the box, this alignment gets gashed by the flat route once the fake pulls the second level out of the play. Look for a spy or scrape exchange defender who stays home on the quarterback, since disciplined edge players who do not bite on the fake are the main counter to this concept. Post-snap, track the flat defender's reaction speed, if he sinks under the rollout throw immediately, the quarterback needs to reset to the deeper crossing option instead of forcing the flat. Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge disguised as run support, since a defender who initially steps up for run fit but converts to contain can collapse the pocket before the rollout fully develops.
Call this on early downs like first and second down when the defense is keyed on stopping FB Zone Toss, FB Lead Toss Wk, or FB Lead Toss Str since the toss fake carries more weight after establishing that run tendency. Watch for linebacker depth before the snap, if the second level is stacked tight to the line expecting run, this rollout will pull them out of position and open the flat read immediately. Use the rollout to buy time against man coverage on the edge, since the quarterback can throw on the run or tuck it if the contain defender crashes too hard on the fake. Sequence this play after a few reps of FB Dive, FB Dive Wk, or FB Trap so linebackers start cheating downhill, making the play-action element far more effective. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out if you diagnose zone coverage sitting underneath, giving the quarterback a faster answer than working through the full rollout progression.
