FB Dive out of Trio Right (Flexbone) is a straight downhill run play that hands the ball to the fullback through the A gap, relying on the interior offensive line to create a vertical crease. This is a pure run play designed to attack light boxes and gap fills before linebackers can flow, not a play-action or RPO look despite the Flexbone dressing. The primary read progression is simple: identify the first open gap at the mesh point, with the fullback keying the center and guard double team before bouncing outside if the A gap is clogged.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth, six in the box or fewer signals a green light for this dive concept. Look at defensive tackle alignment, if both interior linemen are shaded outside the guards the A gap will be wide open for the fullback. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's first step, if he flows hard to a fake or bites on aggressive run fit tendencies the dive lane stays clean. This play struggles against gap control defenses and 46 style fronts where extra defenders are stacked directly over the center and guards. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the fullback or sitting in the A gap, since a disciplined user linebacker can blow this play up before the fullback reaches the line.
Use FB Dive on early downs when the defense shows a light box of six or fewer defenders, since the Flexbone alignment often draws linebackers out of position pre-snap.
Watch for safety rotation before the snap, if both safeties stay deep in a two high shell you have a numbers advantage in the run fit and should trust the dive.
Pair this play with FB Trap and FB Zone Toss in the same set to keep linebackers guessing between the inside hit and the misdirection outside, since all three plays share similar backfield action.
Run FB Dive Wk as a changeup look to the same concept if defenses start keying the fullback path on standard FB Dive.
Avoid calling this against stacked eight man boxes or when the defense shows heavy blitz indicators at the second level, since there is no RPO bailout built into this design.
Use PA FB Dive later in a series once you have established FB Dive as a tendency, since it will freeze linebackers who bite on the fake.
