Curl Flat out of Trio Right in the Flexbone is a zone beater that attacks the intermediate levels with a classic high-low stretch on one side of the field. The concept pairs a curl route settling into the soft spot of zone coverage with a flat route underneath, creating a natural conflict for the corner or curl-flat defender in Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells. Primary progression starts with the curl route working for a sit-down window against zone drops, then works down to the flat as the checkdown or hot read versus underneath pressure or man coverage leverage.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment since Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells leave the curl window vulnerable while two high shells like Cover 4 or Cover 2 can rob the curl with a deep quarter or half defender. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the curl-flat defender sinks too deep the flat route is wide open, if he stays flat-footed on the flat the curl sits down right behind him. Key the strong safety or nickel defender for a lurk threat sitting in the passing lane, a user-controlled defender jumping the curl route is a common counter so be ready to check down to the flat immediately. Man coverage with underneath linebackers in trail technique struggles against this combo since the flat route stretches them horizontally, but Cover 2 with a hard-sinking corner into the flat and a linebacker robbing the curl can shut this concept down. Watch for a nano blitz or overload pressure look pre-snap, since a fast underneath blitz can beat the quarterback to his first read before the curl route sits down.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing their hand before the snap so you know if you are facing zone drops or man leverage. Against Cover 3, throw the curl route on time since the flat defender will widen with the flat route and open the window underneath the deep third corner. Hot route the flat defender into a quick out or speed out if you see press man corners jumping outside routes, this gives you a faster access throw against man coverage. Pair this play with FB Dive Wk and FB Trap in your call sheet to keep the box honest, then come back to Curl Flat on second and medium once the defense starts crashing down on run fits. Best used on second and short to medium or third and short since the flat route offers a high floor completion while the curl gives you a chance to move the chains on a bigger gain.
