Mike Blitz 0 is a zero coverage blitz out of the 3-4 Grizzly Base 5-2 personnel that sends the Mike linebacker on a designed A-gap blitz while every remaining defender plays man coverage with no deep safety help. This is a pressure package built to win with speed and disguise, not a coverage shell, so the primary read as the blitzer is a direct beeline to the quarterback through the shortest gap available. On the back end there is no true progression since it is straight man match, but you want to user the most dangerous route defender (usually the slot corner or nickel) to erase the quarterback's first hot read and force him to hold the ball into the pressure.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a running back staying in to block, a stay-home back can pick up your blitzer and turn your extra rusher into a wasted man advantage Watch for empty backfield sets or bunch formations, these alignments create natural rub routes that beat man coverage and can spring a receiver open before your pressure ever arrives Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes immediately since zero coverage means every receiver is singled up, if he looks to a deep comeback or double move route your defender is likely beaten and there is no safety to bail him out This play is shut down hard by hot routes into quick slants or screens, if the offense sniffs blitz pre-snap they can dump the ball to the flat before your rush gets home Look for play-action shots off of this exact personnel look, if the running back sells run fake and releases late on a wheel or seam route your man defender can lose leverage, be ready to user that defender and undercut the route rather than trailing
Use this call on early downs or short yardage situations where the offense is likely to run or throw quick game, since zero blitz leaves you exposed to any deep shot play
Check the offensive personnel and formation before the snap, if you see three or more receivers spread wide, consider audibling out since man coverage with no help over the top is risky against vertical stacks and slot fades
User the Mike linebacker on the snap and take the most direct rush lane instead of looping, timing matters more than power in a zero blitz because the coverage behind you cannot hold up long
Pair this play in your call sheet with Cover 3 or Tampa 2 Show 3 from the same set so your opponent cannot sit on tendencies, showing the same Grizzly 3-4 look before switching from all out pressure to a zone shell keeps quarterbacks guessing
Save this blitz for third and medium or third and long when the extra rusher can disrupt timing before the receiver clears his man coverage defender, avoid calling it on third and short against play-action heavy offenses since the run fake can freeze your underneath defenders
