Cover 3 out of the 3-4 Grizzly Base 5-2 personnel is a three deep, four under zone shell built to defend the whole field against both the run and the pass. The single high safety sits deep middle while the two outside thirds are handled by cornerbacks, letting the four underneath defenders (two hook zones and two curl to flat) squeeze passing lanes against slants, drags, and flat routes. Your primary read as the defender is the single high safety identifying run flow first, then working middle of field vertical threats before flowing to the flat if a receiver breaks outside.
Watch the quarterback pre-snap alignment and motion. If the offense sends a receiver in motion and the defense does not adjust, look for the hole in the seam between the deep third and the underneath zone. Post-snap, key the deep middle safety. If he breaks late or bites on a run fake, expect a vertical shot down the middle of the field that Cover 3 cannot recover from in time. This shell shuts down most man beater double moves and vertical route combinations since the deep thirds provide help over the top on outside releases. It is vulnerable to high low stretches in the flat and curl to flat combos since only one underneath defender is responsible for each zone and can get outleveraged by twin receiver sets. Identify if the offense is running four verticals or a deep out and up. Cover 3 corners must stay on top of their third and not get baited by hard outside releases, or the seam and sideline both open up for explosive gains.
Call this on early downs or obvious run downs since the 3-4 front gets an extra body in the box against inside zone and power runs.
Check the offensive formation pre-snap. If you see stacked or bunch receivers to one side, user the underneath defender closest to that trips concept since Cover 3 can get overloaded by three level route combos on one side.
User the deep middle safety and stay disciplined on play action. Do not bite on the run fake or you open up the deep middle seam for a big shot play.
Hot route the flat defenders to sink slightly deeper if you expect quick outs or curl flat combos, since Cover 3 is naturally vulnerable to the flat being attacked underneath the corner drop.
Pair this with Mike Sim 2 or Cover 2 Invert in your play calling sequence to disguise your shell. Showing the same pre-snap alignment before rotating into different coverages keeps quarterbacks guessing and prevents them from diagnosing Cover 3 based on safety depth alone.
