3 Edge Pinch is a run defense front out of the 3-4 Grizzly set designed to attack outside zone and off tackle runs before they can develop. The defensive ends and outside linebackers pinch down hard off the snap to seal the edges and force ball carriers back into the teeth of the run fits, while the linebackers flow downhill to fill inside gaps. This is a run stop call, not a coverage beater, and the primary read progression starts with the edge defenders squeezing the tackles, then the second level linebackers reading the running back's aiming point to close on the ball.
Read the guards at the snap, if they pull or reach block outside it confirms an edge run and your pinch defenders should be crashing down immediately. Watch the running back's shoulders and aiming point, outside zone stretches will show the back pressing the sideline while gap schemes show him hitting downhill fast. Key the tight end or extra blocker on the play side, an added blocker to the edge is the clearest pre-snap tell that this front will be tested. This call struggles against inside zone or draw plays since the pinch action can overcommit your ends outside and open cutback lanes. User the middle linebacker to plug any cutback lane immediately after diagnosing the run, since the second level defenders are the last line before a big gain.
Call this on early downs in run heavy personnel matchups when you expect outside zone, stretch, or toss concepts based on offensive tendencies.
Check the running back alignment and offensive line splits pre-snap, wider splits and a back offset to the play side often signal an edge run this call is built to stop.
Use the pinch technique to bait pulling guards and lead blockers into wasted movement, then user your strong side linebacker to spill the ball back inside to help.
Pair 3 Edge Pinch with Cover 3 or Cover 2 Invert in your play calling sequence so offenses cannot key on your front from personnel or formation alone.
Avoid this call on clear passing downs since the edge rushers are committed to run fits and will not generate consistent pressure on dropback passes.
