Corners out of Weak I Slot Open is a vertical shot play built around two corner routes stacking the outside from the boundary and slot receiver, with a deep crosser from the backside X working as a coverage-clearing route over the top. The single running back releases into a check release flare to the flat, giving the quarterback a checkdown outlet if both corner routes are covered downfield. This is a man beater that attacks off-man leverage on the corners and creates natural rub traffic underneath, with the crossing route also giving it zone-beater value against Cover 3 by working through the deep middle void. Primary read progression starts with the near-side corner route, moves to the far corner/crosser combo working opposite, then checks down to the back releasing to the flat.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are shaded to one side or rotated down into the box this play has a clean throwing lane to the opposite corner route. Watch cornerback press versus off alignment, press man corners get beat easily by the outside release into the corner route, so bail technique corners are the tougher matchup. Post-snap, key the flat defender or nickel/outside linebacker, if he sinks with the crossing route instead of jumping the underlying flat, the checkdown to the back opens up. User the deep half safety toward the trips or two-receiver side to jump the corner route and force the quarterback to the crosser or checkdown. Watch for a Cover 3 buzz or robber concept, a defender sitting in the deep middle hole can undercut the crossing route timing and bait an interception if the quarterback stares it down.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second-and-medium when you can afford a double move shot without being desperate for yardage.
Pre-snap, identify single-high versus two-high safety shells, this play thrives against single-high man coverage where the corner routes can win outside leverage.
If you see Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties sitting on top, hot route the crossing receiver into a deep dig or have your quarterback work the checkdown to the back in the flat instead of forcing the corner throw.
Pair this with Curls or WR In from the same Slot Open set to keep the defense honest on route depth, then dial up Corners once you bait linebackers into shallow drops.
Use play action shot plays like PA Boot Slide or PA Power O earlier in a series to get the safeties creeping up, then hit Corners when they bite on run action tendencies.
