Corner Flat out of Weak I Slot Open (20 personnel) sends both outside receivers vertical before breaking into corner routes toward the sideline, clearing space underneath. The slot receiver runs a flat route from the backfield area to the boundary, while the fullback checks down into a short flat route on the opposite side as a safety valve. This is a zone beater designed to attack the flat and deep corner zones simultaneously, with the primary read progression going flat route first (quick outlet), then corner route to the field side if the flat is covered.
Defensive Reads
Look for cornerbacks playing off coverage or bailing at the snap, which signals zone and opens up the corner routes against soft spots in the deep quarters. Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, since shallow linebackers will struggle to get width fast enough to cover the flat routes on either side. If you see a single-high safety rotate hard to one side, that indicates man coverage or a Cover 3 shell, which makes the corner route vulnerable to a well timed sideline throw. User controlled defenders sitting in the flat or shooting outside as a lurk threat can jump the flat route reads, so be ready to progress quickly to the corner route or check down to the fullback. Disguised blitzes from the slot or overload pressure to the flat side will collapse the pocket quickly, so recognize blitz keys post-snap and get the ball out on the flat route before the throw window closes.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety look, since the corner routes need room to work outside against soft coverage.
Use the flat route as your first read on quick throws against blitz or man pressure, then progress to the corner route if you get a clean pocket and see a zone drop underneath.
Hot route the fullback flat if you anticipate an overload blitz to that side, giving yourself an immediate outlet against pressure.
This play pairs well with Quick Slants and Curls in the same set, since all three attack underneath zones and force linebackers to declare their drops before the snap.
Best called on second and medium or third and short, where the quick flat conversion and corner route shot both give you manageable answers based on the defensive look.
