PA Post Shot from Strong I H Slot fakes a hand off out of the 21 personnel look before attacking downfield with three vertical stems. The slot receiver runs a deep post from the inside alignment, the flanker breaks into a post from the outside numbers, and the backside X receiver runs a straight go route up the sideline, giving the quarterback a three level shot concept off play action. This is a play action shot play designed to hit a big chunk gain versus man or single high zone coverage, with the primary read starting on the slot post working to the flanker post and using the backside go as a window read against overplayed safety help.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety depth and alignment before the snap, a single high safety shading toward the two post routes leaves the backside go route on an island against man coverage. Watch for corners playing off man technique on the flanker and slot, since both post routes can be undercut by a user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field zone. Cover 3 with a hard playside rotation is the ideal shell to beat this since it opens the backside go route and only leaves one deep defender to cover two inside posts. Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties shut this down quickly since the post routes run into help over the top and the underneath defenders can rally on the play action fake. Key the linebacker depth after the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake it opens passing lanes for the post routes to work through the intermediate zone before the safety can rotate over.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses expect run out of Strong I personnel, since the play action fake plays off that run tendency. Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the strength of the formation, the backside go route is your window since that corner is isolated. Hot route the backside X into a deep comeback or hitch if you are worried about a corner sitting on the go route against zone drop shells. Pair this shot play with HB Dive and Power O out of the same formation to sell the run fake convincingly before dialing this up once the defense bites on run support. Avoid throwing into two high safety shells unless the slot post can separate quickly, since the double post concept gets congested against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with help over the top.
