This is a man and zone beater with the primary read progression going seam to dig to wheel, using the vertical stem to hold the safety before working the dig into the void it leaves behind.
Defensive Reads
Read the free safety depth pre-snap since a single high safety shell means the seam route can occupy him and open the dig underneath. Watch the cornerback leverage on the slot receiver, outside leverage invites the seam to win inside while inside leverage signals the dig will be jumped by underneath defenders. Post-snap, track the middle linebacker or hook defender because a fast drop into the dig window will shut down the primary read and force the wheel route progression. This concept beats Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells since the seam clears the deep middle void, but it struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 6 where a safety can rob the dig route. Use the wheel route as a check down against aggressive underneath zone drops or when the middle linebacker sits on the dig route.
