Counter Weak out of Strong I H Slot is a power run play designed to hit away from the strength of the formation, pulling blockers across the formation to lead the HB through a gap on the weak side. The diagram shows the HB taking a counter step before the handoff, following the FB and a pulling lineman as they kick out and lead through the hole while the line down blocks to seal the play side. This is not a man or zone beater since it is a pure gap scheme run play built to attack light boxes and overpursuing linebackers with misdirection.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defenses stacking the strong side with extra defenders, this play is designed to counter that exact alignment by hitting weak. If the defense runs a hard edge blitz off the weak side snap, this play struggles because it removes the lead blocker before the kick out block develops. Look for linebackers who bite hard on run fits toward the strong side flow, Counter Weak exploits their aggressive pursuit angles. A disciplined Mike linebacker who reads counter action and stays home in the weak side gap can blow this play up before the pulling blocker arrives. Zone blitzes or scrape exchange calls that keep a defender in the counter lane will negate the misdirection and force the HB to bounce outside into traffic.
Usage Tips
Use this play when the defense shows a heavy overhang or crashes hard to the strong side pre snap since the counter action punishes downhill flow to the wrong gap.
Check the Mike linebacker depth before the snap, if he is sitting tight in the box with no extra hat to the weak side this play has a clean angle.
Set up Counter Weak by running HB Dive and Power O earlier in the game so linebackers start keying quick hitting downhill runs, then hit them with the misdirection once they start flowing fast.
Use manual control on your pulling blocker to seek the first threat in the alley instead of trusting the AI, this lets you climb to the second level defender more consistently.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are still base personnel and have not sold out for pass rush.
