PA FB Flat is a play-action shot play out of Strong I H Slot that sells inside zone or power action before releasing two vertical routes and a checkdown to the flat. Both outside receivers run seam-to-corner routes up the sideline, stemming vertical off the play fake, while the fullback leaks out to the flat as the built-in outlet against blitz pressure or aggressive linebacker flow. The line and remaining backfield personnel hold up in max protect to sell the run fake and buy time for the double vertical shots to develop downfield. This is a man beater and explosive-play shot designed to punish linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression going deep outside receiver first, backside vertical second, and fullback flat as the checkdown valve.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the safety depth and count the box: a light box with two-high safeties signals soft run support and a green light for the double vertical shots. Watch linebacker depth and flow at the snap, aggressive downhill linebackers who crash the run fake leave the middle of the field open for the verticals and the flat throw becomes secondary. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined safeties who stay deep and read the quarterback's eyes are the toughest matchup for this play since the corner routes have no room to work outside. Man coverage with a single high safety is where this play hits hardest, especially if the corner biting on the run fake gets beat vertically with no deep help. Post-snap, key any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow flat zone since that defender can jump the fullback route and turn the checkdown into a turnover, so only throw the flat if it is truly clean.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance when the defense expects run based on Strong I personnel and prior run calls in the set. Check the safety alignment pre-snap: two-high shells give you a clean matchup on the corner routes since safeties bite on run fake, one-high or run-blitz looks mean you should be ready to check to the fullback flat immediately. Hot route the backside vertical to a quick out or drag if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, this turns a low-percentage shot into a high-percentage completion. Sequence this play after running HB Dive, Inside Zone Wk, or Power O a few times to condition the linebackers to bite on the run fake, then dial this up to hit the play-action window. Use max protect awareness against nano blitzes, if the defense shows a heavy box or overload blitz alignment pre-snap, consider audibling to PA Boot Slide instead since it gets the quarterback moving away from pressure.
