Mtn Z-choice is a motion-based option route concept out of Singleback 11 personnel that puts the Z receiver in a choice route where he reads the defender and breaks in, out, or vertical depending on coverage leverage. The motion across the formation forces the defense to declare man or zone before the snap, giving the quarterback an immediate coverage indicator. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the option route creating natural separation, though it can pick up zone defenses that fail to adjust their landmarks after the motion, and the primary read progression starts with the Z choice route before working to the underneath crossers and check-down options.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defender assigned to the motion man before the snap, if he trails across the formation it is almost always man coverage and the choice route should win Check safety depth and rotation post-motion, a single high safety rotating to the choice route side signals a possible Cover 1 or Cover 3 look that still favors the option route against man technique Identify Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells by watching if the corner sinks and the safety stays deep without rotating, this softens the choice route break and forces a quicker checkdown read Beware of user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field, they can undercut the choice route if the quarterback holds the ball too long Look for disguised blitz packages off the edge since the motion can sometimes trigger a hot blitz call, if extra rushers show quickly get the ball out to the choice route before the pocket collapses
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers and safeties into showing man coverage through their rotation or lack thereof
If the defender follows the Z receiver across the formation in motion, immediately key the choice route as your first read since it is a strong indicator of man coverage
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see a Cover 2 shell to punish the flat defender who has to respect the choice route
This play works best on second and medium to third and short since the choice route needs room to break and the quarterback needs a clean pocket to let it develop
Pair this with Mtn YZ-Choice and Mtn Zone Alert in the same set so the defense cannot key on motion alone, since multiple plays share the same pre-snap look but attack different coverages
