Breakdown

Mtn HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Singleback 11 personnel with pre-snap motion across the formation to shift numbers and identify man versus zone before the snap. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sliding as a unit and reading the weakside flow so the HB can press the line and cut off the first crease he sees. The TE releases on a shallow drag-style route to help clear the underneath zone and hold linebackers, but this is fundamentally a run play designed to attack downhill gaps rather than a pass concept. Primary read progression is: pre-snap motion for defensive reaction, then backside cutback lane, then bounce outside if the frontside gets sealed.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties sit deep in a two-high shell the box is light and the zone run has a clean lane. Watch linebacker flow after the motion, aggressive linebackers who chase the motion man open up the backside cutback for a big gain. Identify five-man or six-man fronts, this play struggles against overloaded eight-man boxes or heavy blitz packages that crash the frontside gap. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the hole or lurking at the mesh point, that defender can blow up the cutback read if he stays disciplined instead of biting on the zone flow. Man coverage with linebackers locked on the TE or HB in motion tends to leave the backside gap vacated, favor the cutback in that situation.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing early, if they run with the motion man you have a numbers advantage on the backside cutback.

Run this on early downs (1st and 2nd, 3rd and short) to stay balanced and keep defenses honest against your pass-heavy calls in Toad X Nasty.

Watch the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer in the box this play hits hard on a natural zone track.

Pair this with Mtn PA Boot Insert Cross or PA Sprint HB Flat off the same formation and personnel to sell the run fake and hit the defense with play-action once they start jumping the zone run fits.

User the fullback or TE blocker at the point of attack to seal an extra defender and manually widen the cutback lane against stacked fronts.
