Breakdown

Mtn Double Outs is a pass play out of Singleback Toad X Nasty with 11 personnel that puts a receiver in motion across the formation before the snap, shown by the red route running flat across the field from the backside. On the play side, two receivers stack vertically off the line and break outward on out routes at different depths, creating a high low double outs concept versus the sideline, while the slot receiver runs a quick out or flat route underneath to the boundary side. This is a man beater concept designed to attack cornerbacks playing tight coverage or trailing the motion, with the deep out clearing space for the shorter out to settle into the void underneath, and the primary read progression starts with the deep out at the top of the stem before working down to the shallow out and flat route.

Defensive Reads

Watch the motion defender pre-snap, if a defender follows the motion man man to man that confirms man coverage and the double outs concept becomes very difficult to defend Key the flat zone defender post-snap, if he sinks under the shallow out route and stays disciplined it can take away the easy underneath completion Identify two high safety shells before the snap, since a defense sitting in a two deep zone can have cornerbacks jump the outside out routes if they read the quarterback's eyes quickly Watch for a linebacker or nickel blitz off the edge, since the quarterback needs time to let the deep out route develop and any pressure off the corner disrupts the timing of this concept Look for user controlled defenders sitting in the flat area jumping the shallow out route, which forces the quarterback to go directly to the deeper out as the first read instead of progressing down

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone coverage, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are almost certainly facing man coverage and can attack the double outs with confidence

Target the deeper out route first against man coverage since the high low stacking of both outs stresses a single defender trying to cover both levels

Against zone shells with a hard flat defender, check down quickly to the shallow out or flat route since the underneath zone defender will sit on the short route

This play works best on second and medium to long distance situations where the sideline out routes can pick up a chunk of yardage without needing to stay in bounds

Pair this play with Mtn PA Boot Insert Cross or Mtn Zone Alert in your play calling sequence to keep defenses honest, since the initial motion look is similar but the actual route concepts attack different areas of the field
