HB Dive out of Singleback Toad X Nasty is a straight downhill run play with the halfback aligned directly behind the quarterback, hitting the A-gap immediately off the snap. The offensive line uses a standard inline blocking scheme, with the fullback or extra blockers not shown here since this is an 11 personnel look, meaning the tackles and guards climb to the second level while the center handles the nose. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the A-gap first, then bounce to either B-gap based on which side the defensive line and linebackers flow toward.
Watch for defensive tackles shading hard into the A-gaps pre-snap, since that alignment signals a plugged run fit designed to blow up the dive at the mesh point. Key the middle linebacker depth before the snap, as a linebacker sitting shallow at four yards or less usually means the defense expects an inside run and will fill quickly. This play struggles against stacked fronts and blitz packages that send extra defenders through the A and B gaps, so avoid calling it into heavy run blitz looks. On the user side, watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hole ready to make an early tackle, which shuts this play down before the back can build momentum. This run hits best against zone-based fronts where linebackers are reading through the line rather than shooting gaps immediately, so identify base 4-3 or 3-4 zone alignments before calling it.
Call HB Dive on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay on schedule against defenses that are keying on pass sets from 11 personnel.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders inside the tackles.
Pair this with PA Post Dig or Y Trail from the same Toad X Nasty set to keep linebackers honest after they start cheating up to stop the dive.
Use manual protection or send in motion pre-snap to identify if the defense is in man coverage, since the dive hits fastest against man alignments where defensive backs are turned away from the box.
Mix in HB Power O and HB Counter from this set to disguise your run tendencies and keep the defense guessing on gap direction.
