Breakdown

Shallow Cross out of Singleback Tight Flex 11 personnel features a five man route concept built to stress zone defenders horizontally while giving a true man beater underneath. The X receiver runs a deep shallow crosser (red route) all the way across the field, working underneath the two vertical routes stacked outside the numbers, while the flexed TE releases to the corner from the slot and the boundary receiver sits at the sticks. The HB swings out of the backfield on a wheel/circle route from the opposite side, adding a fifth option and a check down against blitz. Primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser working from the backside, then bumps to the corner route breaking outside, and finally checks down to the HB out of the backfield if the underneath window is late developing.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check linebacker depth and spacing because tight underneath zone drops with linebackers sitting shallow will clog the crosser and force you to the corner route or HB check down instead. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, which signals man coverage underneath and makes the shallow crosser the immediate answer since it drags defenders into traffic. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard flat defender sinking outside, the corner route from the flexed TE will have a soft window against the deep third defender. Key the weak side linebacker at the snap, if he widens to the flat expect a lurking user defender ready to jump the crosser, so be ready to hit the HB swing instead. Against blitz looks with fewer than two deep defenders, get the ball out fast to the shallow crosser before the crossing route defenders can convert their assignment into a rush.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and medium when you expect man coverage because the shallow crosser creates natural rub traffic that beats trailing defenders. Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties, if so expect zone drops and you should target the crosser sitting in the hole between the flat and linebacker level. Hot route the outside receiver into a deeper comeback if you see press man to give yourself a boundary option away from the crosser traffic. Pair this play with HB Slam or HB Dive from the same set to keep defenders honest on run fits before coming back to this crosser to exploit linebackers who bite on run action. Sequence this behind Mesh earlier in a series since both plays hit shallow crossing patterns and will condition user linebackers to jump the wrong route.
