HB Slam is a downhill dive run out of Singleback Tight Flex with 11 personnel. The offensive line blocks straight ahead with the fullback-less dive scheme relying on the interior line to seal gaps at the point of attack, while the HB takes the handoff and attacks the A or B gap immediately off the snap. There is no route concept to speak of here since this is a pure run play, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the initial hole, read the first level movement from the defensive line, and cut to daylight based on how the linebackers flow.
Pre-snap, count the defenders in the box and check linebacker depth since stacked fronts with linebackers crashing downhill will squeeze this dive quickly. Watch for a defensive tackle or nose shading directly over the play-side guard, as this alignment is designed to blow up interior dive runs before they develop. Post-snap, key on whether the linebackers are reading run-pass or if they are already flowing hard to the mesh point, which signals they have identified the dive out of this personnel grouping. This play struggles against odd-man fronts and aggressive user-controlled linebackers who shoot gaps immediately, but it can find creases against defenses playing base zone coverage with linebackers sitting back in pass drops. If the defense shows a heavy blitz package pre-snap with extra defenders crowding the line, expect this dive to get minimal yardage and consider checking to a quick pass instead.
Call HB Slam on early downs when you need a manageable gain and want to keep defenses honest against your pass-heavy playbook out of this formation. Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or more defenders in the box, consider audibling to a pass concept like Shallow Cross or Out N Ups instead. Use this play in a run-pass sequence by pairing it with PA Waggle or PA Draw Cross from the same set so the defense has to respect the run action every time you show this personnel. Against aggressive gap-shooting defensive tackles, user the HB and be patient to let the dive develop rather than forcing it into a clogged hole. Mix in HB Dive and HB Draw from this same set to keep linebacker fits guessing and prevent defenders from keying the mesh point too quickly.
