HB Dive out of Singleback Tight Flex is a straight downhill run play designed to hit the interior gaps quickly before the defensive front can flow and fill. The offensive line blocks a standard interior dive scheme, with the TE and both WRs holding their alignment to sell run action without pulling extra defenders out of the box, while the HB takes the handoff on a direct north-south track behind the center and guards. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense since there are no routes run, it is a pure run play whose primary read progression is the HB reading the initial double team or push at the point of attack and picking the first crease between the guards before bouncing outside if the middle is clogged.
Watch the defensive line alignment pre-snap, a 3-4 or 4-3 under front with defensive tackles shaded into the A gaps will clog this run quickly. Key the middle linebacker depth, if he is sitting shallow at five yards or less he can beat blockers to the hole and blow up the dive before it develops. Identify run blitzes from the second level pre-snap, safeties creeping into the box or linebackers showing blitz stance signal a hard fill that this play cannot outrun. This play struggles against gap-sound defenses and stacked fronts, but it consistently gashes teams playing wide zone or spread coverage shells with light boxes. Post-snap, watch for user-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill too early, that opens a cutback lane to the backside that the HB can exploit.
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to keep the defense honest and set up your play-action shots later in the series.
Check the defensive front pre-snap for light boxes with six or fewer defenders inside the tackles, this is the ideal look to call HB Dive.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look or stacked box with eight in the box, consider audibling to HB Slip Screen or PA Waggle to punish the aggression instead.
Pair HB Dive with Off Tackle and HB Draw in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing on run fits and force them to respect both the interior and edge run threats.
User the fullback or lead blocker if available to seal the first linebacker you see flowing downhill, this creates the crease the HB needs to hit quickly.
