QB Draw out of Singleback Doubles Y Open is a designed quarterback run that sells pass first, letting the offensive line show pass protection before the QB delays and follows a lane up the middle. The diagram shows the QB taking a quick jab step to the left before cutting back through the vacated interior gap as the line engages defenders in what looks like a pass set. This is a pure run play with no route concepts to read, and the primary "read" is patience: let the delay develop, identify the crease created by the line's pass-blocking sets, and hit the hole downhill before linebackers diagnose run.
Look for linebackers who bite hard on pass-read keys and drop into zone coverage immediately at the snap, since that vacates the middle lane this play is designed to hit. This beats zone coverages like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where linebackers drop deep into throwing lanes and lose gap integrity. Man coverage with linebackers in press or shallow zone can shut this down quickly since they stay closer to the box and can react to the delay. Watch for a spy linebacker sitting in the middle of the field pre-snap, as that defender is coached specifically to read QB draw and will blow it up. Interior blitzes or A gap pressure from a 46 look defeat this play outright since the delay gives extra rushers time to collapse the pocket before the lane opens.
Call this on early downs or in short yardage (3rd and 2 or less) when the defense shows a pass-heavy shell with linebackers backpedaling at the snap. Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait aggressive edge rushers upfield, which widens the interior lane for the delayed handoff look. Pair this with Slants or Mtn Stick N Nod earlier in a series so the defense keys on quick passing concepts and linebackers stay shallow, making the delayed draw hit even harder. Avoid calling this against defenses that show heavy A gap blitz packages pre-snap since the delay negates any blocking advantage. If the CPU or opponent starts sending an extra rusher off the edge, hot route the RB to chip or use motion to check the blitz before the snap.
