Mtn Y Stick lines up from Singleback Doubles Y Open with 11 personnel and sends the backside slot receiver in motion before the snap to check the coverage shell. The route concept is a classic Stick combo on the field side: the outside receiver runs a quick out at the sticks, the TE (Y) sits down in the hole at five yards, and the HB releases from the backfield on a flat route to the flat behind him, creating a high low horizontal stretch on the flat defender. Backside, both receivers run go routes up the numbers to hold the safeties deep and clear space underneath. This is a man and zone beater built for a quick, timing based passing attack, with the Stick side as the primary read progression: flat to stick to corner route.
Read the flat defender first, if he sinks with the TE stick route, throw the HB flat route immediately for an easy completion. Key the underneath hook or curl defender on the play side, if he widens to take away the stick route the flat throw to the HB is wide open. Watch for Cover 3 sky or buzz shells that roll a safety down to the flat, this can jump the HB route so have the stick as your backup read. Identify blitz packages pre-snap by checking linebacker depth, if the play side linebacker walks up near the line of scrimmage the flat route becomes a hot throw versus pressure. Beware of Cover 2 man or man match schemes that carry the TE across the formation, since the stick route loses its natural picks in true man coverage without banjo technique from the defense.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the ball is snapped, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation it is man coverage.
Attack the Stick concept side against Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone shells since the flat and stick routes occupy the flat defender and hole defender simultaneously.
Hot route the backside go routes into slants or drags versus Cover 4 or two high shells if you need a faster underneath answer against soft zone drops.
Run this on second and medium or third and short to medium since the Stick concept gets the ball out fast and picks up the sticks in a low risk manner.
Pair this play with Four Verticals or Y Cross Flood in your play calling sequence, since the initial motion and formation look mirrors those plays and keeps the defense guessing between quick game and shot plays.
