PA Slot Crosses uses a play-action fake out of Singleback Doubles Y Open to hold the linebackers before attacking the middle of the field with a crossing route combo. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a deep vertical to stretch the safety, while the slot receiver and inline TE cross underneath: one breaks in and up the seam, the other runs a deep dig that settles into the void vacated by the play-action freeze. The backside X receiver runs an out breaking route to hold the flat defender. Primary read progression starts with the deep crosser off the play-action fake, then works to the underneath crosser sitting in the middle if the safety squeezes the top route, with the vertical as a shot-play checkdown against single high looks.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap since PA Slot Crosses is designed to punish linebackers who step up on the run fake, leaving the crossing lanes wide open. Man coverage shells struggle with this concept because the crossers create natural rub traffic that separates from trailing defenders, so if you see man match indicators pre-snap this play has a strong edge. Zone defenses with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field can undercut the deep crosser, so scan for a user controlled linebacker sinking into that throwing lane before committing to the read. Cover 2 shells with hard flat defenders can jump the underneath crosser early, so be ready to climb the progression to the deep dig or vertical if the flat defender flashes into the crossing lane. Blitz heavy calls that bring extra rushers off the edge shorten your window, so identify pressure looks pre-snap and be prepared to hot route the flat route into a quick breaking pattern for a safety valve.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are geared to stop the run, since the play-action fake plays off run tendencies. Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two high safeties, prioritize the deep dig since the middle of the field is more likely to be open behind linebackers biting on the fake. Against single high safety shells, take a peek at the vertical route on the outside since the deep safety often has to respect run action and can be late rotating over. Hot route the flat runner into a quick out or speed out if you see a corner blitz coming off the edge to give yourself an outlet with time to throw. Pair this with HB Dive or QB Draw earlier in a series to sell the run fake, then call PA Slot Crosses once the defense starts stacking the box or crashing linebackers downhill.
