Breakdown

HB Dive out of Singleback Doubles Y Open sends the halfback straight downhill through the A gap behind the QB, with the offensive line executing a standard down block scheme to seal running lanes on both sides of the center. All four receivers (two outside, two slot) run vertical releases up the sideline and seams, occupying the deep defenders and clearing the second level for the run. This is a pure run play designed to punish light boxes and overly aggressive linebacker fits, with the primary read being the halfback's initial aiming point at the center before adjusting to whichever gap opens based on the defensive front.

Defensive Reads

Watch the depth of the middle linebacker at the snap, if he is sitting close to the line expecting run he can blow up the dive before it develops. Key on the defensive line alignment, a shaded nose tackle or 3-technique DT can clog the primary A gap and force the back to bounce late. This run gets stopped by heavy run blitzes and stacked eight man fronts since there is no lead blocker or extra gap protection beyond the standard line. Look for user-controlled linebackers crashing downhill immediately after the snap, which signals the defense sniffed out the dive concept. Zone coverages with safeties staying deep to respect the vertical releases open up the biggest cutback lanes, while man coverage with underneath linebackers spying the backfield shrinks the running room considerably.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this against six or fewer defenders in the box to avoid negative plays.

If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 3 with safeties rotated deep, this play exploits the light front since both safeties are occupied by the vertical route stems.

Use the left or right stick to manually place the halfback into the widest crease rather than forcing the play up the middle if the nose or DT is shaded to one side.

Pair this with HB Draw and QB Draw in the same play calling sequence to keep defenders honest on downhill run fits without tipping your hand pre-snap.

Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the sticks, and mix in Slants or Bubble Screen afterward once the defense starts stacking the box.
