Breakdown

Y Mtn Flood is a classic three level flood concept run to the trips side out of Wing Trips Wk Nasty. The backside X runs a deep dig crossing the field while the two receivers to the trips side stack the coverage vertically: the outside receiver takes a deep go route, the slot runs a corner route to the flood zone, and the tight end releases into the shallow flat underneath. The lone running back checks protection and works a vertical release up the middle as a checkdown option against a soft underneath zone. This is a Cover 3 beater built to stress a single deep third defender with three high low routes stacked on top of each other, and the primary read progression starts with the flat route to see how the underneath defender reacts, then climbs to the corner route as the intermediate window, and finally to the deep go if the safety bites down on the flood side.

Defensive Reads

Look for a single high safety pre snap as the first indicator this play was called into good coverage for the offense, since Cover 3 leaves one defender responsible for three vertical stems on the flood side. Watch the flat defender at the snap: if he widens hard to take away the tight end's shallow route, the corner route window opens up immediately behind him. Key the deep third defender on the flood side; if he stays wide with the go route the corner route will sit in a soft spot underneath him, but if he sinks under the corner the deep go becomes the shot play. Beware Cover 4 or Cover 2 looks with two safeties, since the extra deep defender can help bracket the corner route and take away the easiest throw, forcing you to work the backside dig or checkdown instead. Watch for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the flood zone reading the quarterback's eyes, since a patient user can rob the corner route if you stare it down instead of working through the progression.

Usage Tips

Pre snap identify whether you are facing a single high or two high shell, since this concept is designed specifically to punish Cover 3 and other single high looks with a hard flat defender. If the corner sits deep and the flat defender widens with the tight end, throw the corner route sitting behind him in the intermediate window before the safety can rotate over. Use motion pre snap to identify man versus zone: if the defender follows across the formation you are likely getting man coverage and should lean toward the deep dig or the vertical seam from the running back instead of the flood side. Against zone heavy defenses stick with the flood progression from flat to corner to go, resetting your eyes each level instead of staring down the deep route. Pair this play with Y Mtn Drive or Y Mtn Bench Ins in your play calling sequence so the defense sees the same trips look but has to respect multiple concepts, then hit them with Flood once they start jumping the shorter routes.
