Breakdown

Y Mtn Drive is a Cover 4 beater run out of Shotgun Wing Trips Wk Nasty with 11 personnel. Off the trips side the two outside receivers run a mountain concept, a deep corner route stacked behind an out breaking flag route, stretching the safety and corner vertically and horizontally. To the boundary the in-line attached receiver runs a drive route flat across the field underneath while the running back releases to the flat, giving you a layered read from deep to underneath. The primary read progression starts with the corner route to identify if the safety flips his hips deep, then works down to the flag route for the natural window against Cover 4 rotation, and finally checks down to the drive route or the flat if both windows are covered.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties pre-snap since this concept is built specifically to punish Cover 4 rotation on the trips side. Watch the flat defender and outside linebacker at the snap, if they widen with the flag route that opens the drive route working underneath for an easy completion. Key the safety over the corner route, if he stays deep and does not bite on the flag route you need to move on quickly to the drive or checkdown instead of forcing the deep shot. Man coverage with inside leverage on the outside receivers shuts this down fast since the corner route gets contested at the catch point, so bail to the hot routed drive concept immediately. Watch for a nano blitz off the edge since the running back stays in to release late to the flat, leaving the tackle exposed if the defense sends an extra rusher pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or second and medium when you want to attack a Cover 4 shell before the safeties get comfortable jumping shorter routes. Pre-snap, check if the corner over the trips side is playing outside leverage, since that tells you the flag route will have room to sit down against soft zone drops. If you see man coverage instead, hot route the drive route into a quick out or slant to speed up the underneath option since the corner concept takes too long to develop against tight man. Pair this call with Y Mtn Flood in your sequencing so the defense has to respect both the deep corner shot and the flood underneath, forcing safeties to hesitate on rotation. Use motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts to man or stays static in zone, which confirms whether you go through the top of the progression or immediately work the drive route.
