The three receivers to the trips side and the backside X all release vertically to stress deep zone defenders and isolate corners in man coverage, while the HB releases into a choice route (in or out based on leverage) as the underneath check down against blitzes. Pass protection is a slide scheme with the HB scanning for pressure before releasing, and the primary read progression starts backside with the isolated Go route on man coverage, works to the trips side seams versus zone, and comes back down to the HB choice route as the safety valve versus pressure or if the deep routes are covered.
Defensive Reads
Check the deep safety alignment before the snap, since a single high safety cannot help on both the backside iso Go and the trips side seams at the same time. Watch the corner over the backside X, if he is playing off man or shows outside shade, the Go route wins on a fade throw to the boundary. Read the linebackers depth at the snap, since shallow linebackers can undercut the HB choice route if they sit instead of blitzing. This play struggles against Cover 3 with a hard flat defender jumping the choice route and a deep third defender sitting on the seams, so if you see a three deep shell with underneath zone defenders spread evenly, look to check down early or throw it away. Man coverage with a single high safety and no shown blitz is the ideal look to let this play develop for the deep shot, while heavy pressure looks with man coverage across the board should trigger an immediate check to the HB choice as a quick outlet.
Usage Tips
Use this play on third and long or two minute situations where you need to stress the deep middle and take a shot down the field against man coverage. Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety looks. Against single high, target the backside iso Go route since the corner has no deep help. Against two high or Cover 4, work the trips side seams where the safety has to widen and the corner presses vertically. Hot route the HB choice route to a hitch or flat if you diagnose a blitz, since the choice route naturally sits down against zone but needs extra time versus man. Pair this play with Stick or PA Slide out of the same formation to keep the defense honest, since the quick game sets up the safety to bite up and open the deep shots on this play call. Use motion or a quick pre-snap shift to identify if a defender follows the HB, which confirms man coverage and tells you to trust the Go routes.
