Breakdown

HB Base is a downhill dive run out of Shotgun Wing Trips Wk Nasty, designed to attack the interior gaps with the offensive line stepping in unison to seal running lanes. The diagram shows the running back taking a direct handoff and hitting the hole behind the center and guards, with the line working a straightforward gap scheme rather than pulling linemen. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the mesh point, read the initial double team, and pick the first crease that opens between the guards.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front with a full box, since HB Base struggles against gap-sound fronts with an extra hat inside. Watch linebacker depth: if the mike and will are sitting shallow at five yards or less, they can fill quickly and blow up this play before the back gets to the line. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing downhill immediately at the snap, since aggressive gap shooters can beat the double team before the line sets its combo blocks. This play is most vulnerable to a straight blitz or run blitz call with an extra defender stacked over the center, so avoid calling it into obvious run-blitz personnel. It beats light boxes and passive read-and-react linebackers who are keying on receiver motion or width instead of the direct handoff.

Usage Tips

Use HB Base on early downs when you need a low risk, positive gain play against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box. Check the defensive front pre-snap: if you see stacked linebackers or a extra man crashing downhill, consider audibling to Outside Zone instead since this play has no lateral stretch to bail you out. Pair HB Base with RPO Buck Alert Out from this same set so the defense has to respect both the interior run and the quick pass read, keeping linebackers honest. Run this concept on second and short or third and short to convert, since the tight blocking window rewards physical mismatches at the point of attack more than explosive plays. Mix in Inside Zone Split later in the drive once the defense starts overplaying the direct dive look, since both plays share a similar mesh point but different blocking angles.
