RPO Walk Alert Power is a true run-pass option built off a Power G run scheme, giving the quarterback a pre and post snap alert to throw off the run action if the defense overcommits to the box. The blocking upfront pulls the backside guard to lead through the hole with gap scheme protection, while the alert receiver on the perimeter runs a quick throw option (typically a hitch or bubble) that the quarterback can pull based on the defender count. The primary read is the QB counting box defenders at the snap: if the numbers favor the run, hand it off on Power G, if a defender crashes down or the alert receiver's man bails, throw the RPO alert immediately.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard downhill on run action without respecting the alert route, that is your green light to pull and throw. Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap, since single high alignments often mean an extra body in the box that makes the alert throw the higher percentage play. Key the flat defender or slot corner assigned to the alert receiver, if he sits on the run fit or widens too aggressively, the quick throw window opens up. User controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone or lurking near the alert route can jump the throw, so know the sim AI tendencies versus a human spy before committing to the pass side. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with aggressive linebacker fits are the toughest shells to beat since they fill the run gap and still have underneath help on the alert route, while light boxes or Cover 2 shells with off corners get gashed by either option.
Count the box pre-snap before the snap to identify if the defense is in a run-friendly six or seven man front, since that number dictates whether you should be looking run or pass from the jump.
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are more likely to sell out against the run and leave the alert receiver isolated.
If the corner over the alert receiver is playing off coverage or shows soft zone leverage, pull the ball immediately instead of testing the run fit.
Pair this with Power G later in the same drive once the defense has seen the RPO tax them for easy completions, since they will start cheating a defender out wide and open up the interior run lane.
Sequence this with RPO Alert Power Hitches or RPO Walk Alert Post to keep the defense guessing on which alert route is live, forcing linebackers and corners to hesitate on their run fits.
