RPO Alert Buck Sweep is a run pass option built around a buck sweep run scheme with pulling guards leading the way for the ball carrier to the edge. The alert tag gives the quarterback a pre snap or post snap flip to a quick perimeter pass concept if the numbers favor throwing instead of handing off, making this a true hybrid run and RPO play rather than a straight designed run. The primary read progression starts with the box count and second level flow: the quarterback reads the alert side defenders first to decide whether to pull and throw, then if he hands it off the runner reads the pulling guards and follows the sweep lane, working from inside leverage defenders out to the edge alley.
Watch the alignment of the overhang defender or slot corner before the snap since that player determines whether the quarterback pulls the ball on the alert. Key the linebacker flow at the snap, if they crash hard toward the pulling guards the quarterback should already be reading the alert throw. Man coverage on the alert receiver with no help over the top is the biggest tell to throw it immediately rather than hand off into a loaded box. Zone shells with a flat defender sitting on the alert route can shut this down, so the run action becomes the better option against those coverages. Watch for a user controlled defender crashing down as a run blitz or lurking in the alert throwing lane, since that late movement often signals a jump on the sweep or an attempt to bait the quarterback into a bad alert read.
Check the box count before the snap and use the alert side as your first look if defenders are crashing down hard on run support.
If the defense shows light numbers to the sweep side with a corner or safety sitting too far outside, take the alert throw instead of grinding out the run.
Use hot routes sparingly on this play since the alert concept is already built to attack overhang defenders, but adjust the alert receiver's route depth if you see a hard corner squatting underneath.
This play works best on early downs or short yardage situations where defenses are conditioned to expect a standard run, since the alert keeps them honest.
