Power G is a gap scheme run play out of Shotgun Wide Doubles Y Off WK, built around a guard pulling across the formation to lead through the hole while the play side double teams down on the defensive tackle. This is a run play designed to seal the edge with combo blocks up front, giving the running back a clear crease to press the hole and read the pulling guard's block. The primary read progression starts with the play side double team, then shifts to the pulling guard's kick out or lead block on the first defender showing outside the tackle box, and finally the running back's one cut decision based on how the linebackers flow.
Look for the Mike linebacker's depth and alignment before the snap, since a linebacker sitting tight to the line signals a run blitz that can beat the guard's pull before he gets to the hole. Watch the play side defensive end and tackle alignment, since a shaded three technique or wide nine can disrupt the double team and force the running back to cut back early. Post snap, track the backside linebacker's pursuit angle, because fast flow to the play side often opens a natural cutback lane against overpursuing defenses. This run struggles against stacked eight man fronts and inside blitzes that fill the pulling guard's lane before he can turn the corner, so avoid calling it into heavy run commit looks or short yardage goal line packages that stack extra defenders inside. User controlled defenders shooting the backside A gap or B gap can blow up this play immediately, so be ready to check to a pass alert like RPO Walk Alert Post if you see an aggressive user flying downhill pre-snap.
Check the box count pre-snap and only run Power G into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle area to avoid a free hitter on the pulling guard. Use motion or a quick glance at the Mike linebacker to see if he is stacked or shaded, since a shaded Mike can clog the pulling guard's lane and force a cutback. This play hits best on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel instead of nickel or dime looks. Pair Power G with RPO Walk Alert Power Hitches in the same set so the defense has to respect both the gap run action and the quick pass alert off similar formation and personnel. If the defense starts loading the box after a few successful Power G reps, counter with PA Counter Post Curls or RPO Alert Buck Sweep to punish overaggressive linebacker flow with the same shotgun look.
