Defensive Reads
Key the defensive end and outside linebacker to the play side before the snap, since a crashing edge defender or a wide 9 technique can blow up the wrap before it develops. Watch for a Mike linebacker scraping over the top immediately at the snap, which signals the defense has diagnosed the QB run and will fill the cutback lane. Man coverage on the perimeter receivers with off corners tends to lose contain quickest, so an aggressive slot corner triggering downhill on the snap is a green light for the QB to hit the frontside gap fast. Zone shells with a hard flat defender sitting on the RB's release can be a problem, since that defender is free to fold back in as a spy on the QB wrap. If the user takes manual control of a defensive lineman or linebacker and shoots a gap immediately, expect the play design to be sniffed out, so be ready to bail into SFT Inside Zone or a quick pass from this set on the next snap to counter the aggression.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion out of Trips X Nasty Off Wk to identify whether the defense is in man or zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man confirms man coverage and tells you the box is likely lighter for the wrap.
Call this on early downs when you need a manageable gain, since the designed QB run does not depend on receivers winning routes and keeps the play call safer against disguised blitzes.
Check the linebacker depth before the snap. If both linebackers are stacked tight to the box, hot route the outside receivers into quick slants or hitches to hold the corners and prevent a fast flow to the QB wrap lane.
Pair this play with SFT Inside Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect both a between the tackles run and the edge wrap, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Sequence it with SFT PA Curl Seam later in the drive since the run action from QB Wrap sets up the play-action fake, pulling linebackers up and opening the seam behind them.
