Quick Unders is a trips-based quick game concept out of Shotgun Trips X Nasty Off Wk. From the trips side, the outer receiver runs a deep out breaking to the sideline, the middle slot cuts an in-route back across the field, and the inner slot runs a shallow drag underneath heading the opposite direction, creating a natural triangle stretch at three levels. The X receiver on the backside runs a deep dig crossing under everything, while the HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline as a checkdown or man beater against a linebacker. Primary read progression starts with the shallow drag underneath, works up to the in-route sitting behind it, then to the deep out on the boundary, with the wheel route as the outlet against blown coverage or aggressive underneath defenders.
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow he can jump the drag route and force you to move to your second read immediately. Check for a single high safety pre-snap, this often signals man coverage or a Cover 3 shell that leaves the deep out vulnerable to a well-timed throw. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone since that is the most common way defenses take away the drag and in-route combo. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, the deep out and wheel route become your best options since the underneath routes are more likely to be sat on by zone defenders. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest green light for the wheel route to hit as a big play against a linebacker in coverage.
Use this play on 3rd and short to medium since the shallow drag and in-route combo is designed to pick up quick, easy yardage after the snap.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing zone with linebackers sitting in short drops or man with defenders mirroring the trips bunch, since the in-route and drag are both effective man and zone beaters.
If you see a single high safety, prioritize the deep out to the boundary since that defender is often isolated against zone rotation.
Hot route the drag into a quick out if you see a linebacker sitting directly in its path, or send the HB on the wheel earlier if the defense shows blitz to create a one-on-one against a slower linebacker.
Pair this play with Snag Slot Digs or Quick Short Post in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath throws and intermediate crossers off similar formation looks.
