Mtn Drag Sluggo is a man beater from Shotgun Trips X Nasty Off Wk that uses pre-snap motion to help identify man versus zone before the snap. Off the motion, the backside receiver runs a deep vertical clear route while the trips side stacks a sluggo (slant and go) up the numbers, a deep dig crossing over the middle, and a quick drag underneath that sits right behind the offensive line. The blocking is a standard 5 man pass protection to hold up the pocket, and the primary read progression starts with the sluggo route for the explosive shot, works down to the deep dig sitting behind the linebackers, and checks down to the drag as the outlet against pressure.
Pre-snap, check if the defense shifts a corner or safety to match the motion, if a defender runs with the motion man across the formation that confirms man coverage and the sluggo should be your first read Identify single high safety shells (Cover 1 or Cover 3), these leave the sluggo route isolated on a corner with no deep help over the top Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard to cover the deep dig lane that opens up the underneath drag for an easy completion User controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field (a lurking linebacker or robber safety) can jump the deep dig, so know where the user is before committing to that route Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties are the toughest matchup for the sluggo since the safety can rob the top of the route, in that case work the drag and dig combo underneath instead
Use the pre-snap motion across the formation to bait man coverage defenders into declaring, if the motion man gets carried across the field you know it is man and the sluggo has a good shot to win
Take the sluggo shot early against off coverage corners or when you see a single high safety rotate late, the double move destroys press man and trail technique
Against zone drops, work the deep dig as your primary since it sits in the honey hole between the hook and deep third defenders
Pair this play with Mtn Triple Slants or Quick Unders earlier in a series so the defense starts jumping shorter routes, then dial up Mtn Drag Sluggo to hit the sluggo over the top for a chunk play
Best called on second or third and medium when the defense is more willing to show man coverage and blitz off the edge, since the drag gives you a hot answer versus pressure
