Quick Fork Zig is a quick pass concept out of Trips X Nasty Off Wk that attacks the zig combo on the strong side while giving the QB a fast outlet to the weak side. The backside receiver runs a deep zig (corner-breaking route) as the clear-out read, with the two inside trips receivers working a mesh of an out and a shallow drag underneath, while the isolated receiver on the weak side runs a deep crossing route all the way across the field. This is a quick game man beater designed to get the ball out in rhythm, with the primary read starting on the zig route for a possible explosive shot before working down to the underneath drag and out combo against tighter coverage.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage defenses struggle with this concept because the zig route creates natural separation against trail technique, especially if the defender is playing outside leverage. Zone defenses with a deep half safety can squeeze the zig route, so look for a single high safety rotation post snap as your green light to throw it. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk spot underneath, since he can jump the drag route if the QB stares it down too long. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge will speed up the throw, so identify pre-snap if the defense is showing more than four rushers and be ready to get the ball out on the quick out or drag immediately. Cover 2 shells with corners playing the flat can undercut the shallow out route, forcing the QB to climb the pocket and find the drag or zig instead.
Usage Tips
Take a pre-snap look at the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotating late this is a good indicator you can hit the zig route on a blown coverage or bust. Use this play on third and short to medium since the underneath drag and out combo give you a safe checkdown if the zig route is not open. Hot route the shallow drag receiver into a quick out if you are facing aggressive man coverage with a corner playing tight press. Pair this play with Quick Unders and Snag Slot Digs in the same set to keep the defense honest on shallow crossers, then hit them with the deep zig once they start jumping the underneath routes. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the drag route over the middle since the zig will run into deep zone defenders.
